Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference of perceived stigma between patients with Schizophrenia and people with physical disabilities.

Methods : One hundred and thirty six schizophrenic outpatients were participated from the psychiatric outpatient clinic of a university hospital. One hundred and forty two people with physical disabilities (68 brain or spine disability, 22 upper and lower limb disability, 24 visual disability, 28 hearing disability) were participated from the Employment agency for the disabled in Busan. Socio-demographic characteristics, stigma and discrimination (Korean version of the psychiatric patients¡¯ experience of stigma), self esteem (Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale) were gathered from the subjects.

Results : The perceived stigma of patients with schizophrenia showed significantly higher than people with physical disabilities in stigma item 3,4,9. Patients with schizophrenia showed higher score in discrimination item 1,2,3, but lower score in discrimination item 4,7 than people with physical disabilities. There was no statistically significant difference in total score of self-esteem, stigma, and discrimination between patients with schizophrenia and people with
physical disabilities.

Conclusion : The result showed that patients with schizophrenia experience more stigma and discrimination than people with physical disabilities in many of the items. It is because of the prejudice that patients with schizophrenia are dangerous, uncontrollable, and incompetent. Because of this prejudice, patients with schizophrenia have difficulty in interpersonal relationship and social activity.
